Navigation

Whether it's a paper map and compass or a trail app on your phone bring navigation to give yourself options in case things don't go as planned. Or maybe being somewhere unknown is your plan. Personally, I like to review the trail plan in detail ahead of time and commit as much as I can to memory. Then I put my cell phone on airplane mode to conserve power, but still use google maps since gps works even on airplane mode. The maps are pre-downloaded to google maps because of my prior research. I find this is the optimal way to enjoy the trail without being glued to my navigation and at the same time not getting lost.
