Pants
A great pair of synthetic fiber (often nylon and spandex) pants will probably become an essential piece of camp gear. They repel dirt, resist tears, and are breathable. In the evenings you can put a pair of thermal underwear under them and they become the perfect cool weather pants. Pants are my preferred option for hiking over shorts since they protect your legs from scratchy plants, bugs, and sunburn.
